How it works
- Route – we find the driving distance between your start and destination using OpenStreetMap routing.
- Car – we look up your vehicle's official EPA combined MPG from FuelEconomy.gov.
- Fuel price – we look up today's pump prices at gas stations near your starting point for your car's fuel type. You can always edit the price.
- Cost –
distance ÷ MPG × price per gallon, ordistance × L/100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. Round trip doubles it.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the estimate?
EPA ratings are measured under standard conditions. Highway speed, AC use, cargo, tire pressure and traffic can change real-world economy by 10–20%. Use the MPG field to override if you know your own average.
Where do fuel prices come from?
Where available, we use today's posted prices at gas stations near your starting point. Otherwise we use national averages (for the US, from the Energy Information Administration via FuelEconomy.gov, updated weekly). Type in what your station charges for the most precise number.
Does it work in Canada and other countries?
Yes. Choose your country at the top of the form. In the United States we show miles, gallons, MPG and US dollars. In Canada and most other countries we show kilometres, litres, L/100 km and the local currency. You can still switch units yourself.
Does it work for electric cars?
Yes. For EVs we use the EPA kWh-per-100-miles rating and the average residential electricity price.
Is it free?
